Phoebe Calver – 8.3
Nose: Lovely and luscious, with malted milk biscuits, piles of chopped dates and raisins, and some wildflowers. Just a hint of cinnamon.
Palate: More of the malty note, but this time there’s stroopwafel too. Then more dried fruits, and brioche bread and butter pudding.
Finish: The cinnamon notes return on the finish, with a little nuttiness lingering.
Comments: It’s very nicely balanced and something that would undoubtedly hit the spot for a cold winter’s night.
Christopher Coates – 8.2
Nose: Tinned apricots, fresh red apple, pineapple yoghurt and gooseberry jam. Turmeric latte and subtle nutmeg. A little caramel.
Palate: Medium bodied. Ripe red apple, blossom honey and meringue. Then comes vanilla ice cream on fruit (grape, strawberry) flan and butter icing. Caramel cake makes an appearance, too.
Finish: Medium. The cake and icing notes bring balance to the fruits.
Comments: A very well-balanced, mature and quaffable crowd pleaser.
