Phoebe Calver – 8.3
Nose: This is giving me all the rich chocolate gateau vibes, with layers of rich red berries and sugar. Then there’s a cinnamon stick and nutmeg, with a hint of candied peel.
Palate: More of the sweetness, but it’s developed into blackcurrant jam, toffee pennies and chopped dates. There’s some orange marmalade in there, too.
Finish: More of that lovely nutmeg to finish.
Comments: I’d certainly save this as a real treat after a long day. It’s rich and feels rather deluxe, like it deserves an occasion.
Christopher Coates – 8.0
Nose: Soor plooms, raw rhubarb and a jar of mixed fruit boiled sweets. Some traditional iced cream and tinned pineapple chunks. Vanilla oat cookies, malted milk, and a touch of candied ginger.
Palate: Light-medium bodied. Rhubarb and vanilla custard boiled sweets, strawberry cables and a little dried pineapple. Some tinned mandarin and grapefruit segments, in sweetened juice. Subtle malt loaf character, with sultanas.
Finish: Medium-short. The rhubarb with custard lingers.
Comments: Big flavours and rather tasty.
