Bethany Whymark – 8.8
Nose: A creamy grassiness, like rye. Jalapeño peppers and cracked black peppercorns, melded with butterscotch and vanilla crème brûlée.
Palate: The caramel notes recede to reveal sweet red apples and ripe pears, then savoury bell pepper and stalky herbal notes. A touch of rye bread with butter.
Finish: Methol pepper and black peppercorns, with pickled jalapeños and cloudy apple juice.
Comments: While the barrel notes held sway in the aroma, the palate revealed some beautiful complexity. I could sit and savour this one all night.
Phoebe Calver – 9.1
Nose: Beautiful light green grass right after it rains, roquito peppers, sandalwood, raisin and 80 per cent dark chocolate with chilli flakes.
Palate: Brings out some sweet spice, rich earthy notes, then toasted brioche, sherried dried fruit and intense oaky spices.
Finish: That roquito pepper note lingers, with the warm woody toasted spice.
Comments: This is a bit of a stunner, complex, yet incredibly drinkable and approachable.
